If you live in Seminole County and need the help of a Seminole County
divorce lawyer or family law attorney... We Can Help You
Divorce, child custody, modification, child support, and other family law cases are typically filed with the Court in the county in
which the parties reside. Therefore, if you are married and you and your spouse live in Seminole County, your Seminole County
divorce, child custody, modification, child support, alimony, visitation, relocation, or other family law case, would typically be filed
with the Circuit Court at the Seminole County Courthouse located in downtown Sanford.
Of course, there are family law cases in which the
spouses do not both reside in Seminole County. In those
divorce or family law cases, the case could be filed in
Seminole County, but would not necessarily have to be
filed in Seminole County. Similarly, in those paternity,
child custody, visitation, child support, modification, or
other types of family law cases in which the unmaried
parents do not both reside in Seminole County, the family
law case could be filed in Seminole County, but would
not necessarily have to be filed in Seminole County.

Similarly, if you are the unmarried parent of a child and you live with
the other parent in Seminole County, your Seminole County child
custody, modification, child support, paternity, visitation, relocation,
or other type of family law case, would typically be filed at the
downtown Sanford Courthouse.
However, as noted above, it is not the city of residence but the
county of residence which determines with what Court a divorce or
other type of family law case should be filed. And naturally, the
marital status of the parties is not a relevant factor for purposes of
determining with what Court a family law case should be filed.

Just Steps from the Seminole County Courthouse
Before Seminole County was established, the area that today comprises Seminole County was part of Orange County
with Mellonville (now part of Sanford) as its county seat. However, in 1856, the county seat was moved to Orlando.
In 1875, Henry Sanford, founder of the town of Sanford, made an appeal to the Orange County Commission to move
the Orange County seat to Sanford. The County's rejection of Sanford's plans began a rivalry of sorts, and for years
thereafter, the creation of Seminole County was often discussed. Then in 1912, the discussions regarding the formation
of Seminole County gained momentum and in 1913, the Florida Legislature established Seminole County. After the
split, the old rivalry subsided and residents from both counties celebrated the creation of Seminole County.
Sanford became the Seminole County seat and the newly formed Seminole County saw "fireworks." Wanting to
celebrate the birth of Seminole County, the residents rolled out a cannon that was traditionally fired on special
occasions. Unfortunately, the eager Seminole County residents overloaded the old cannon and when they fired it, the
old cannon blew apart. Today, that cannon barrel, now painted white, serves as the flagpole stand in front of the
building that houses the Greater Sanford Chamber of Commerce.
