If you live in Orange City and need the help of a
Central Florida Criminal Defense Lawyer... We Can Help You
In State Court, civil cases are usually filed in the county where at least one of the parties involved resides. But, criminal cases
are not always filed in the county of residence of the person accused. Criminal law cases are usually filed and tried in the
county, in other words, in the venue, in which the criminal offense charged is alleged to have occured.
Sometimes, though, the prosecution does not know exactly
where the criminal offense was supposedly committed,
such as when near the county line or in a body of water.
Pursuant to Florida Statute and the Florida Constitution, in
cases like those, the person may be charged conjunctively
in two or more counties. Then, the person accused, after
selecting in which of those counties he or she wants the
trial to be held, would present their criminal defense in their
county of selection.

As you know, Orange City is located in Volusia County, Florida.
So if a crime allegedly took place within the city limits of Orange
City, the state criminal case would usually be filed with the Court in
Volusia County. And naturally, the person accused would defend
against the allegations there, aided of course by his or her criminal
defense lawyer.
Even if the person accused actually resided in another county or
another state, this would likely be the case. So the Orange City
residence of the person accused would not revelant to where the
criminal case would usually be filed.
This applies to juvenile delinquency or juvenile defense cases and
to adult felony and misdemeanor criminal cases.

The first known permanent settlers in the Orange City area were Louis and Mary Ann Thursby. The Thursby's moved
to the Blue Springs / Orange City area in the early 1850's after they purchased a cabin on 133 acres from a
nurseryman who spent the winters with his family in the Orange City area and the rest of the year in New York.
But Orange City was not founded until 1874 when Dr. Seth French and a group of settlers from Wisconsin came to
the area. Dr. French and his group purchased a few thousand acres of land in the Orange City area and established
the "Wisconsin Settlement." Some years later, Dr. French was appointed Florida's first Commissioner of Immigration.
The Orange City area settlement became well established; in 1876 some of the women began a book exchange that
would become the Orange City Library, in 1877 the residents organized the Orange City Methodist Church, and by
1878 Orange City had founded the first public school in Volusia County.
Shortly thereafter, Orange City was named for the thousands of acres of orange groves planted in and around the city
and Orange City was incorporated in 1882. Today, Orange City has a population of over ten thousand.
