Seminole County was established in 1913 by the Florida Legislature. Subsequently, the first Seminole County
Courthouse was established in the Welbourne Building (later known as the Valdez Hotel) which was situated on the
southeast corner of North Park Avenue and Commercial Street. Before being demolished, this first Seminole County
Court was located directly across the street from where our law offices stand today.
In 1918, the Elks Lodge, which was located a little further north (towards the lake) on Park Avenue, was purchased
by Seminole County. After some renovations, the "new" Seminole County Court opened at this location in 1919.
At the time, right next to the Seminole County Courthouse, catty corner from where our law offices stand today, was
a tire shop. Because that Seminole County Court did not have air conditioning, court sessions would be held with the
courthouse windows open to let the air circulate. Sometimes, the noise from the tire shop got so loud that a deputy
would have to lean out of one of the courthouse windows and ask the mechanics to keep the noise down. And, it
was not uncommon for the mechanics, the people at the tire shop, and the people who were walking outside near the
Seminole County Courthouse to be able to listen to the lawyers as they argued their court cases.
Listening to court cases from outside was no longer possible after the opening of the "new" Seminole County Court
in 1972 because it was air conditioned. This "new" courthouse was built right next to the "old" Seminole County
Court which the county subsequently tore down. The site of the "old" courthouse is now parking for the "new"
Seminole County Courthouse, located on Park Avenue, in downtown Sanford, just steps from our law offices.
