In 1859, George Sauls, his wife
Adeline, and their six children, became
the first settlers in the area which today
is known as Deltona. Back then, the
desolate area was referred to as
Saulsville.
Sauls, who was originally from Haw
Creek to the north served as a secret
agent for the Confederates during the
Civil War. Sauls is said to have laid out
the Titusville Public Road when, in
1865, he helped a Confederate
General haul a Federal steamboat
captured by the Confederate Army
from Saulsville to the Titusville area.
The area was rather quiet until 1962,
when a company purchased 17,203
acres for development. Later that year,
the Mackle Company began
construction of homes in the
subdivision which they named Deltona
Lakes and, in 1963, the first residents
moved in. Interestingly, although it is
located approximately halfway
between Orlando and Daytona, the
name Deltona is a combination of
Deland and Daytona.
The area was incorporated as the City
of Deltona in 1995, on its third try.
Today, it has a population of over
eighty five thousand.

The City of Deland is named after its
founder Henry Deland. In March of
1876, Deland, who lived in New York
and had made a fortune in the baking
soda business, went to visit some
relatives in South Carolina. After he
arrived in South Carolina, his
brother-in-law, who had recently
purchased some land in Florida,
convinced Deland to travel with him to
Florida to see the land.
Shortly thereafter, they traveled into
the area that later would become his
namesake town. He was so impressed
with the area that by the end of the
day, he himself had purchased 159
acres. On his visit, he met with several
of the settlers in the area and saw the
great potential for development.
When he returned in October, Deland
purchased more land and met with the
settlers again. He shared with them his
vision of a town based on culture and
education and donated land and funds
to further its development.
Then, in December, Deland again
returned to the area and once again
met with the settlers. At that meeting in
1876, he and the settlers voted to
name their community with his name.
