How to Find a Good Lawyer – Part 5
Start Making Some Phone Calls
After you determine which type of consultation will best help you to choose a
lawyer, your next step on your search to find a good attorney will be to call the
attorneys on your list one by one. Call each law office and identify yourself and the
reason for your call. Find out who you are speaking with and make a note. Also,
make sure that you confirm that the lawyer helps people with situations such as
yours.
Then, if you had previously decided you wanted to find a good attorney by
meeting with the lawyer in person, find out how soon you can meet with the
attorney to speak about your situation. Likewise, even if you want to find a good
attorney by telephone and only want a telephone consultation, find out how soon
you can speak with the lawyer about your case. Naturally, if you only want a
telephone consultation, be ready to proceed with your consultation at that time as
outlined in this series on how to find a good attorney.
Ask Some Questions About the Consultation
If you have decided you prefer to meet with the attorney in person, find out how
long you should expect the consultation to be. You should also ask if you need to
bring anything with you to the consultation. Additionally, you should ask how much
they charge for the consultation. And, if you have enlisted the assistance of a family
member to help you to choose a lawyer, make sure you ask if you can bring
someone with you to the consultation keeping in mind that the attorney / client
privilege may not extend to that person.
Schedule a Consultation if You Are Ready
After listening to and considering the responses you have been provided, based on
your outline on how to choose a lawyer, you should have an idea of whether you
want to schedule the appointment. If you feel comfortable with the information you
have received, go ahead and schedule the appointment. If you are not sure, you
may want to tell them that you need to process the information that they have
provided and then proceed to call the next lawyer on your list. Again, keeping
notes that you can later review will be helpful to you when you are ready to
choose a lawyer.
Organize Your Documents Before Your Consultation
After you have scheduled a consultation with your attorney of choice, the next step
in your search to find a good attorney should be to review the documentation
relevant to your situation which you had previously gathered. You should also
consider assembling the documentation in chronological order, especially if you are
consulting about a situation that has some history or if you are consulting about a
case that has already been filed. Assembling the documentation in some orderly
fashion will help you to choose a lawyer because you and the lawyer will be able
to use the additional time to go over more details or different scenarios that may
be applicable to your situation.
Additionally, if you are missing any documents that you know are relevant to your
situation, you should consider getting the documents before you schedule your
consultation. Relevant documents, depending on your specific situation, may
include medical reports, contracts, school records, photographs, property deeds,
police reports, pay stubs, tax returns, bills, e-mails, legal paperwork from a related
case, etc. Having all the relevant documents available for your consultation will
help you to find a good attorney and to choose a lawyer because it will help you
get the most our of your consultation and minimizes the chances that you will move
in the wrong direction based on missing information.
