How to Find a Good Lawyer – Part 3
Free Legal Consultations
Some lawyers offer free consultations. Unfortunately, except for personal injury
and contingency fee type cases where the lawyer may charge a percentage of the
recovery, free legal consultations are often limited to 15 or 20 minutes. And,
because free legal consultations are normally very limited as to time, they usually
end up being limited in scope. In your search to find a lawyer, you may want to
consider whether a free legal consultation outside the realm of a personal injury
type situation is really worth it.
Will You Have Enough Time?
You should think about how much time, realistically, it would take you to fully
explain your situation. You should also think about how much time it would take to
go over any documents that are related to your situation. Does the amount of time
you need to fully explain the circumstances that are legally relevant to your
situation appear to match the time you will be provided during the free legal
consultation? Does it leave ample and sufficient time for the lawyer to provide you
with a solid legal analysis of the situation and recommendations based on the
information you expect to provide? And will it help you choose a good lawyer?
If the amount of time you will be provided during the free legal consultation is not
sufficient for you to fully explain your situation, is not sufficient to go over your
documentation, is not sufficient to discuss the law as it applies to your case, is not
sufficient to discuss the possible solutions that may be available to you, is not
sufficient to discuss the positives and the negatives of each possible solution, and is
not sufficient to discuss the impact of each possible solution on your future, then
the free legal consultation may not be as great a value as would appear at first
glance. After all, you are looking to find a lawyer to help you with your specific
situation not just to make a new friend.
What if You Only Cover the Highlights?
Nevertheless, in your search to find a lawyer, you might think to yourself, what if
you decide you do not want to discuss the law, do not want to discuss the
positives and the negatives of each possible solution, and do not want to discuss
the impact of each possible solution on your future? Additionally, let us say you
are able to fit the explanation of this important situation for which you are seeking
legal help into a 5 or 10 minute time frame so you will leave the attorney at least 5
minutes to provide you with some legal analysis? Also, let us say you decide to go
over only the most important looking documents? Doing so would cut a lot of time
off and might allow you to fit your consultation in the allotted time.
Well, after you consider whether it would be wise to cut all those things out of
your consultation, in your search to find a lawyer, you should consider that leaving
some information or documentation out of your discussion may affect the legal
advice you should receive in your particular situation. Additionally, in your search
to find a lawyer, you should consider that leaving legally relevant information out of
your discussion may actually end up pointing you in the wrong direction and is
likely to be of no use in helping you choose a good lawyer.
Why is the Consultation Free?
After you have considered all of the above you should consider the following
points in your search to find an attorney. Is the free legal consultation really
designed to help you? Will receiving a free legal consultation mean you will be
receiving free legal representation? If the free legal consultation is not really
designed to help you or if you will not be receiving free legal representation after
your free legal consultation you should consider what the purpose of giving you a
free legal consultation is.
Now all this being said, a free consultation is free, at least in the sense that you are
not out of pocket any money at the time of the consultation. Nevertheless, you
should consider that a free consultation may be quite costly in the long run. So
make sure you take that into account in your search to find a lawyer.
