Lake Mary was originally known as Bents, a station on the South Florida Railroad.

The name became attached to the area after 1894, when the Rev. J.F. Sundell built a house on the north shore of the lake which he named after his wife "Mary."

Sundell's religious influence in the area seems to have been considerable. A congregation was organized as part of the Presbytery Church of Lakeland and Sundell served as the pastor of the congregation for 10 years. Rev. Sundell is buried at the Lake Mary Cemetery.

The first subdivision in the area, platted in 1916, was called Modern Woodman's Winter Homes. Four years later this subdivision was replatted under the name Crystal Lake Winter Homes. And due in no small part to the efforts of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Mary Tourist Club, many New England families were attracted to the area.

Lake Mary was incorporated as a city in 1973 and today, it has a population of over fifteen thousand residents.

Longwood was named by one of its early settlers, Edward Warren Henck, who arrived in Florida by steamboat in the 1870's. Henck named the area after a suburb in Boston which he had previously helped plat as a young engineer. Interestingly, the Boston suburb was named after the district on the island of Saint Helena where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled from 1815 to his death in 1821.

Henck was instrumental in the area's development. He was the first postmaster of the local Post Office which was established in 1876. Henck also led the charge in the construction of the railroad that connected Sanford to Orlando and which first ran in 1880.

Henck was elected as the city's first mayor in 1885. His 38 room Longwood Hotel, which was constructed by Joseph Clouser, was completed in 1886. The hotel, which was also known as the Longwood Village Inn, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Longwood was incorporated as a city in 1923 and today, it has a population of over thirteen thousand residents.
